What is a multi-fibre blend, and why use one?
Most fibre supplements are one thing. One fibre, one texture, one job — usually psyllium, or inulin, or a "proprietary blend" that never tells you what's inside. That's not wrong, exactly. But it does leave a lot of your gut out of the conversation.
Here's the idea behind a multi-fibre blend, in one sentence: different fibres ferment in different places, at different speeds, so a mix of them can reach more of your large intestine than any single fibre does alone. This is an educational piece about why that matters — and about the one thing we think every fibre brand should do and most won't: show you every gram.

Fibre isn't one substance — it's a category
"Fibre" is a catch-all word for plant carbohydrates your small intestine can't digest. That's the whole definition, and it covers an enormous range of molecules that behave very differently once they arrive in your colon.
Some are viscous and gel-forming — they thicken and slow things down. Some are readily fermentable — the bacteria in your gut break them down and produce short-chain fatty acids as a by-product. Some are bulking and pass through largely intact. A single fibre usually sits in one of these lanes. A blend can cover several at once.
A 2021 review in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology put it plainly: the effects of fibre depend on its physical and chemical properties — solubility, viscosity and fermentability — and different fibres act through different mechanisms (Gill et al., 2021). In other words, "add fibre" is not one instruction. It's a menu.
The part most people miss: fibres ferment in different places
This is the concept the 6-in-1 is built around, and it's worth slowing down for.
Your large intestine is long. The bacteria that ferment fibre are busiest near the start of it (the proximal colon), where fresh fermentable material first arrives. Rapidly fermented fibres — things like pectin — tend to get used up quickly, early on. That's useful, but it means the far end of your colon (the distal colon) often runs short on fermentable material by the time everything reaches it.
Slowly fermented fibres behave differently. Because bacteria work through them gradually, they're still being fermented further along the tract. Reviews of fibre and prebiotic mechanisms describe exactly this spectrum — fibres differ in how fast and how completely they're fermented, and that fermentation profile shapes where in the colon the action happens (Slavin, 2013; Gill et al., 2021).
Put those two facts together and you get the logic of a blend. A fast-fermenting fibre feeds the near end. A slow-fermenting one carries further. A viscous, gel-forming one does something else again. One fibre feeds one stretch. A mix feeds more of the whole. That's what we mean, in plain language, by "feed more of your gut" — not a health promise, just a description of where different fibres do their work.
What's actually in the 6-in-1 — every gram
Which brings us to the trust device. A blend is only as honest as its label. It's easy to write "six fibres" on a tub and let a "proprietary blend" hide the amounts — maybe there's a meaningful dose of each, maybe there's a pinch of five and a pile of one. You can't tell.
So we don't do that. A 12 g serve of delivers 11 g of soluble fibre from six named sources — soluble corn fibre, gum arabic (acacia), PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum), polydextrose, sodium alginate (from kelp) and citrus pectin — with the full per-source breakdown on the . Six named sources, every gram published on the product page. That's the point. You're not being asked to trust the word "blend"; you're shown exactly what's in it. (If you've read our sea moss work, this is the same principle as publishing an iodine number instead of saying "rich in minerals" — show the figure, let people judge.)
Why these six, in plain terms
Each fibre earns its place by behaving a little differently:
- Soluble corn fibre and polydextrose are slowly and only partly fermented — the kind that tends to carry further along the colon.
- Gum arabic (acacia) is a well-tolerated, gently fermented fibre that's been studied for its slow fermentation profile.
- PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum) is a low-viscosity soluble fibre that's readily fermented and mixes without turning your drink into gel.
- Citrus pectin is a classic gel-forming, more rapidly fermented fibre — the fast end of the spectrum.
- Sodium alginate, from kelp, is viscous and gel-forming, adding a different physical property to the mix.
You don't need to memorise any of that. The takeaway is just that these are six genuinely different tools, not six names for the same thing — and a spread of solubility, viscosity and fermentation speed is the entire reason to combine them. A systematic review of fibre interventions in healthy adults found that different fibre types shift the gut microbiota in different ways (So et al., 2018), which is consistent with the broader point: variety does something a single fibre can't.
Where a single fibre is the better call — honestly
A multi-fibre blend is not automatically the right answer for everyone, and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise.
- If you just want cheap bulk and don't care about variety, plain psyllium husk is inexpensive and effective. A blend costs more because it's doing more; if that "more" isn't what you're after, don't pay for it.
- If a clinician has told you to use one specific fibre — a particular single source, at a particular dose, for a particular reason — follow that advice, not a blend. Their instruction wins.
- If your goal is whole-food fibre from your actual diet, then beans, oats, fruit, vegetables and wholegrains are the real foundation, and a supplement is at most a top-up. No powder replaces the fibre (and everything else) in a plate of real food.
A supplement makes sense when your everyday intake falls short. In Australia and New Zealand, the adequate intake for fibre is around 30 g a day for men and 25 g a day for women, with a higher suggested target for reducing chronic-disease risk (NHMRC, 2006) — and most people don't get there. An 11 g soluble-fibre serve is a meaningful contribution toward that gap, not a substitute for eating well.
A quick note on wording: we describe the gram amounts factually here rather than making a formal "good source of fibre" style claim, because that specific claim wording is regulated and is being finalised with our label consultant. And while the blend suits a range of eating styles, we're describing its fibres in general dietary terms — not presenting it as certified for any particular protocol.
The one habit to keep
Whether you buy ours or anyone else's, take this with you: make the label show you the grams. A fibre blend that lists its sources and the amount of each is answering the real question. A "proprietary blend" is avoiding it.
